Rise of the Climate State 

The research project Rise of the Climate State: Analyzing Socio-Legal Transformations in the Anthropocene, led by Tobias Arnoldussen and Michiel Stapper, is funded through a Starter Grant and forms part of Tilburg Law School’s Global Law and Governance research program. The project is also closely connected to the Constitutionalizing the Anthropocene initiative within the same research program.

The project examines climate policy across four jurisdictions: the European Union, the United States, Japan, and South Korea. Our research extends beyond the analysis of laws and regulations to explore the broader policy discourse surrounding climate change. To do so, we examine a wide range of sources, including white papers, policy reports, parliamentary debates, and media coverage, asking how climate change is framed and why particular narratives emerge in different contexts. In addition, we map the expert networks that influence and shape climate policymaking. The project is carried out in close collaboration with researchers at partner universities in Japan, the United States, and South Korea.
